General Questions

What is Ashes?

Ashes is a browser extension that replaces your default new tab page with a live countdown of your remaining time, based on your birthdate and expected lifespan. It serves as a "memento mori" — a reminder that life is finite, and every second matters.

Unlike typical new tab pages that can be distracting or cluttered, Ashes provides a minimalist, meaningful reminder that helps you live more intentionally and make conscious decisions about how you spend your time online.

Why is it called "Ashes"?

The name "Ashes" refers to the ancient phrase "ashes to ashes, dust to dust" — a reminder of mortality. It symbolizes the impermanence of human life and the value of the time we have.

Just as ashes represent what remains after a fire has burned out, the extension serves as a reminder that our time is constantly burning away, encouraging us to use it wisely while it lasts.

Is Ashes meant to be depressing?

Not at all! While confronting our mortality might seem uncomfortable at first, Ashes is designed to be empowering, not depressing. By acknowledging that our time is limited, we're more likely to:

  • Make conscious choices about how we spend our time
  • Prioritize what truly matters to us
  • Avoid wasting time on things that don't align with our values
  • Live more deliberately and with greater awareness

Many users report that after the initial adjustment period, they find the reminder liberating and clarifying rather than negative.

Who created Ashes?

Ashes was created by Aryan Techie, founder of AROICE. It was built to help people live more deliberately in the digital age, especially given how much time we spend in browser tabs.

The project was inspired by the creator's personal need for a tool that would transform mindless browsing into moments of reflection and intentionality.

You can learn more about the creator at me.aroice.in or aroice.in.

Features & Usage

How does Ashes calculate my remaining time?

Ashes uses your birthdate and an estimated lifespan to calculate your remaining time. The calculation follows these steps:

  1. You enter your date of birth when setting up the extension
  2. You select an estimated lifespan (default is based on global average life expectancy, but you can customize it)
  3. The extension calculates the difference between your projected end date and the current date/time
  4. This remaining time is displayed in various units (years, months, days, hours, etc.)

The timer updates in real-time, providing a continuous reminder of your passing moments.

Can I customize how Ashes looks?

Yes, Ashes offers several customization options:

  • Light/Dark Mode: Choose between light and dark themes based on your preference
  • Time Units: Select which units of time you want to see (years, months, days, hours, minutes, seconds)
  • Display Options: Adjust the size and prominence of different elements
  • Quotes: Toggle the display of philosophical quotes about time and life

More customization options are planned for future updates, including custom backgrounds and color schemes.

Does Ashes work offline?

Yes! Ashes is designed to work completely offline. Once installed, all calculations happen locally in your browser, and no internet connection is required for the core functionality.

This means your countdown will continue to work even when you're not connected to the internet, making it reliable regardless of your connection status.

Can I see inspirational quotes with Ashes? (Coming Soon!)

Yes, Ashes includes a collection of carefully selected philosophical quotes, primarily from Stoic philosophers, that complement the theme of mortality awareness and intentional living.

These quotes rotate periodically and provide additional context and perspective to the time visualization. You can enable or disable the quotes display in the extension settings.

Privacy & Security

Does Ashes collect my personal data?

No. Ashes is designed with privacy as a core principle. The extension:

  • Stores your birthdate and preferences locally on your device only
  • Does not transmit any personal information to any servers
  • Does not use analytics or tracking tools
  • Does not require any account creation or login

Your data remains completely private and under your control at all times. For full details, please see our Privacy Policy.

Is my birthdate information secure?

Yes. Your birthdate is stored using your browser's built-in local storage mechanism and never leaves your device. It's used solely to calculate your remaining time and is not accessible to anyone else, including the extension's creator.

If you ever want to remove this data, you can simply reset the extension's settings or uninstall it entirely.

What permissions does Ashes require?

Ashes requires minimal permissions to function:

  • New Tab Override: To replace your browser's default new tab page
  • Storage: To save your preferences locally on your device

The extension does not request permissions for:

  • Browsing history
  • Website data access
  • Network requests
  • Bookmarks or other browser data

Technical Questions

Which browsers support Ashes?

Ashes is currently available for:

  • Google Chrome
  • Mozilla Firefox

  • Brave Browser
  • Opera
  • Vivaldi

Most Chromium-based browsers should be compatible with the Chrome version of the extension. If you're using a different browser and would like to see Ashes supported, please let us know through the Feedback form.

The extension:

  • Doesn't load external resources

If you want to switch between different new tab experiences, you'll need to enable/disable the extensions as needed through your browser's extension management page.

Is Ashes open-source?

No, Ashes is proprietary software developed by Aryan Techie/AROICE. Its source code is not publicly available.
